Sometimes while you eat, you may have the unpleasant experience of having a piece of food like a popcorn hull or tough meat fiber become lodged between your teeth. Often this can be easily rinsed away by using lukewarm salt water or antiseptic mouthwash swished vigorously in your mouth. However, other times a piece of oral debris can become stubbornly stuck between two of your teeth, causing pressure, discomfort or even pain.

If this happens, please avoid trying to use toothpicks or any kind of sharp tool to pry the piece of food out as this can potentially damage your teeth or significantly injure your gums. Instead, waxed dental floss is the first thing you should reach for. The waxy coating allows the strand to slide easier between teeth to work around the lodged food particle.

Try not to force the floss or snap it between your teeth as this could injure sensitive gum tissue. You could also try using a floss threader with waxed dental floss to work at the object from a different angle. And if you have an oral irrigator in the cabinet, you could use a concentrated stream of water from an to loosen and wash away the food particle without any undue pressure

If you still can’t easily remove the object, please don’t hesitate to call our Oak Park Dentistry’s office in Portage, Michigan at 269-375-0800 to seek professional treatment. Our experienced team is always happy to help you with all your smile care needs!
